This application is intended to substitute commonly used triac phase angle control drives. It is capable of supplying a single-phase a.c. induction motor (or general a.c. inductive/resistive load) with varying a.c. voltage. As in triac control, the voltage applied to the load can be varied from zero to maximum value. On the other hand, it uses pulse width modulation technique (PWM) and, compared with phase angle control used for triacs, produces much lower high harmonic pollution. Thus, it complies much better with EMC/EMI regulations. The circuit is suitable mainly for low-cost designs, where triacs and conduction angle control were used. The drives based on this new control technique are intended for use in consumer and industrial products: washing machine, dishwashers, ventilators, compressors and everywhere that system cost is considered.
