Android operating system (OS) brings features and flexibility that address many of the challenges for embedded applications. Industrial, networking, storage and media equipment manufacturers can benefit from the Android framework to create new innovative products and deploy value-added services faster and less expensive than traditional methods.

By combining Android OS with Freescale’s high-performance embedded processors, built on Power Architecture® technology, equipment manufacturers can create platforms which dynamically instantiate applications and network services to enhance the user experience.

The MPC8536-ADK is a hardware and software platform for design engineers to quickly evaluate Android bytecode operation on the MPC8536E. The MPC8536-ADK platform is preconfigured with Android, Dalvik and demonstration applications. In addition, the MPC8536-ADK platform is shipped with the source code, tool chain and instructions to rebuild the Android run-time environment.

  • CSB1801 µATX carrier board with CSB1880 CSB based on COM Express Form Factor module:
  • 1.25 GHz MPC8536E PowerQUICC® III processor
  • 512 MB 64-bit DDR2-500 memory with ECC
  • 512 MB NAND flash memory
  • Bootable 4-bit SD/MMC Port (SDIO-compliant)

Flex/MicroATX form factor
  • Three PCI Express® connectors
  • 32-bit 3.3V PCI edge connector
  • Dual SATA connectors
  • USB-B connector
  • Dual 10/100/1000 Ethernet
  • Four-port USB 2.0 host ports
  • Headphone and Mic interface
  • Two serial ports and one I2C port
  • Eight GPIO lines and four PCI interrupts
  • Standard 16-pin JTAG
  • XGI Z9M 2D graphics controller with 8 MB frame buffer

Runtime evaluation application features:
  • Prebuilt Android runtime image
  • Optimized Android Virtual Machine (Dalvik) e500v2 on MPC8536 processor (later P1022)
  • Android Library (Bionic) support and optimized for e500v2
  • Linux® 2.6.28 patched and configured for Android OS
  • Android OS version 1.5 (Cupcake)
  • VGA graphics mode up to 1600x1200
  • 2D graphics library, 3D graphics library based on OpenGL ES 1.0 specifications
  • Ethernet connectivity
  • Web browser, WebKit application framework
  • Media support H.263, H.264, MPEG-4 SP, AMR, AAC, MP3, WAV, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP
