AN3751 - Vibration is the mechanical oscillation of a structure about an equilibrium point. The location of the vibrating surface varies with time. A vibratory system must in general include a method of storing potential energy such as elasticity. It must be able to store kinetic energy through mass or inertia and must have a method by which energy is dissipated through either dampening or resistance. The oscillations may be periodic like the motion of a pendulum or it may be random from the movement of a bicycle riding on gravel or falling into a pothole. Vibration is occasionally desirable such as from a tuning fork, or from a musical instrument, but often vibration is undesirable, which can be an indication of wasting energy and creating unwanted noise. Vibrations are often caused by imbalances in the rotating parts, an effect that is generally unwanted.
