Through our Environmental Products efforts, Freescale is working with its customers and suppliers to deliver environmentally sensitive products. Those products meet the requirements of legislation enacted by the European Union (EU), legislation pending in other countries, and the expectations of our customers.

Get the lead out! Elimination of lead (Pb) is the primary effort for Freescale and most semiconductor companies. Lead (Pb) has frequently been used in the semiconductor package assembly process.
Meet new specifications. Our efforts are NOT the result of product quality issues. Freescale products continue to meet the original specifications for which they were designed and sold. To support revised environmental standards, Freescale is developing new
RoHS compliant/lead (Pb) free products.
Develop technical plating solutions. The Freescale product portfolio requires a variety of environmentally sensitive solutions:
- Matte tin (Sn) plating is Freescale’s preferred solution for the majority of its leaded products. To control tin (Sn) whisker growth, the matte tin (Sn) process includes a 150C, one hour, post-plate bake.
- Tin/Silver/Copper (Sn/Ag/Cu) is the identified solution for replacement of tin/lead (Sn/Pb) spheres in grid array packages.
- RoHS compliant legacy packages may use alternative
solutions.
Qualify
RoHS compliant/lead (Pb) free solutions. Freescale is developing technical solutions qualified to meet the RoHS compliance goals.
Freescale offers RoHS compliant product packaging across its portfolio. Package compliance readiness dates are estimates representing predominant sites and package sizes. Individual product availability may vary. Contact your sales representative for more information on specific devices.
Manage the order conversions.
All Sn plated leadframe products are backward compatible with SnPb
solder processes. This allows for prompt transitions on leadframe
products. The SAC BGA products are not recommended for SnPb solder
processes. Freescale intends to provide a continuous supply of BGA
products with SnPb spheres for the foreseeable future. Freescale
will collaborate with customers to manage inventories and backlog,
thus minimizing the financial implications of shortages or excess
stock. Contact your Freescale Account Representative to discuss any
unique requirements or schedules.
Eliminate confusion. Freescale has heard our customers’ demand for unique part numbers to differentiate between lead (Pb) and RoHS compliant/lead (Pb) free products. New RoHS compliant/lead (Pb) free products have new part numbers (with a few customer requested exceptions on custom product). Product labels indicate the qualified moisture sensitivity level (MSL) and the peak package temperature (PPT).
In addition, Freescale is adding 2nd Level Interconnect (lead and ball) finish, RoHS compliance indicator and lead (Pb) free status to the labels.
Plan RoHS compliant/lead (Pb) free production. Balancing production of products with and without lead (Pb) will be a logistics challenge for both the semiconductor and customer assembly processes. Freescale is preparing capacities to meet the expected order conversion rates and timing. To ensure the availability of proper supply on both versions of the products, we ask customers to provide 12 weeks of notice before ramping the RoHS compliant/lead (Pb) free production. Unique circumstances may limit forecast visibility. Work with your marketer or Customer Supply Analyst (CSA) to arrange those exceptions.

RoHS Implementation
The product content directives require Freescale to
remove lead contained in our product where technologically possible. In order to address these directives Freescale is in the process of
implementing it's RoHS transition plan. Learn More.
Supplier Compliance
