Freescale's Industrial Development Platform

IEEE® 1588-2002 "Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems" (PTP) was published in November 2002, to quickly synchronize networked clocks with differing precision, resolution and stability to better than a microsecond-level accuracy. This protocol was designed for low-cost implementation in Ethernet networks with simple installation and maintenance.

IEEE 1588 is popular for applications such as:

    • Time-sensitive telecommunication services which require precision time synchronization between communicating nodes
    • Industrial network switches which synchronize sensors and actuators over a single wire distributed control network for automated assembly process control
    • Powerline networks which synchronize across large-scale distributed power grid switches to enable smooth transfer of power
    • Test/measurement devices which must maintain accurate time synchronization with the device under test in many different operating environments
    • or video equipment which must ensure customers don't hear or see the effects of packet delay or loss from Ethernet-connected speakers and monitors

Freescale products supporting IEEE 1588

  • All ColdFire® processors and MPC83xx and MPC85xx PowerQUICC? processors can run the IXXAT protocol stack with microsecond level clock sync accuracy with no hardware timestamping.

  • PowerQUICC Communication Processors
Some PowerQUICC devices have also added hardware time-stamping to improve the accuracy to +/- 40 ns peak-to-peak. For example, MPC8360E has been publicly demonstrating this capability since April, 2007.
IXXAT evaluation software is available to run on the PowerQUICC Industrial Protocol Evaluation Platform(MPC8360E-RDK).

  • ColdFire Processors
The M5234BCCKIT hardware toolkit enables developers to evaluate embedded applications using IXXAT's IEEE 1588 protocol stack running on the ColdFire? microprocessor family. National Semiconductor offers a 10/100 Ethernet PHY with IEEE 1588 hardware timestamp that may be used with any Freescale device that does not already include the hardware timestamp. FREE evaluation software is available from www.ixxat.com and customers may license software from IXXAT for production.
