LED Drivers

Freescale offers a number of LED backlight solutions for all sizes of LCD panels.
For medium and large size display panels, Freescale offers highly integrated, high performance devices that integrate power management and LED control into a single chip solution, with minimal external components. For larger panels >20”, multi-chip systems can be used to drive the number of LEDs required. Freescale LED drivers can be used in many applications, such as notebook, monitor, TV, portable DVD, industrial, medical and instrumentation displays, as well as non display applications such as the emerging LED lighting segment. Solutions for white LED and RGB LED applications are available.

Freescale LED drivers integrate a number of innovative features which help eliminate some of the issues found with competing devices. Advanced functionality also provides for simpler design and reduced component count, leading to low cost, small form factor solutions.

For RGB systems, Freescale also offers microcontroller solutions for color control, including the associated control software. For more advanced backlighting architectures, such as local dimming TV applications, Freescale’s experienced systems team offer superior support to our customer's developments.

Freescale has a number of Power Management devices which integrate the LED backlight driver for cell phones and MID applications. The Power Management devices (PMIC) can be found in our power management section,  Power Management and User Interface ICs:

Features:

  • Accurate current matching for improved uniformity eliminates the need for manual trimming and matching.
  • High speed driver architecture enables higher frequency PWM operation up to 100kHz, eliminating audible noise, and visual artifacts such as flicker and waterfall noise. In addition, the high speed drivers support wider dimming ranges up to 50,000:1 and improve dimming linearity.
  • Enabled by Freescale’s SMARTMOS technology, many drivers support up to 60V output, driving more LEDs per device and reducing the system BOM. As an example, the MC34844 supports up to 160 LEDs, or 25W backlight from a single chip.
  • Dynamic headroom control (DHC) automatically adjusts the output voltage depending on the voltages across the LED strings to enable minimum voltage across the drivers, reducing power dissipation and improving efficiency.
  • Integration of the boost FET in many applications reduces the BOM, reduces system cost and enables more accurate current control and over current protection.

LCD Backlighting: Providing LED drivers for LCD Backlighting applications

LED Drivers

Freescale's LED drivers simplify backlighting design in LCD panels, reducing panel thickness and lowering the overall solution cost.  Using an I2C/ SM-Bus interface, users can program the LED current, PWM frequency and PWM duty cycle for the LEDs. Multiple devices can be synchronized for driving more LEDs for additional flexibility.

Freescale's LED drivers remove the hardware and software burden on the microcontroller for PWM generation and removes the need for PWM signals to travel the PCB which reduce and EMI-RFI noise in the design.

Features:

  • Accurate current matching for improved display uniformity eliminates the need for manual trimming and matching.
  • More LEDs for larger displays from a single device maximizes efficiency and utilization.
  • Temperature compensation allows stable design and illumination over wide operating temperatures and more uniform illumination.
  • Optical compensation for consistent lifetime performance and better illumination consistency over the lifetime of the product.
  • Ambient light compensation for improved battery life in mobile devices.
