Freescale's MPC8572 PowerQUICC III Processor

Enabling New Services and New Levels of Performance and Application-awareness for Next-Generation Communications Equipment

Freescale's newest PowerQUICC III processors take the next step in enabling high-performance, next generation networks for everyone. The MPC8572 PowerQUICC III family is designed to help designers enhance performance, efficiency and security while bringing their designs to market quickly.

One of the challenges driven by convergence, on top of the growing breadth of applications transported over IP services, is to provide intelligent traffic management that can protect a network while ensuring speedy processing. With convergence, the need for higher bandwidth and a greater potential for increased vulnerabilities arises.

To help fulfill the network performance and security needs of both network designers and users, Freescale has developed an innovative, multicore processor architecture that features powerful dual e500 cores running at up to 1.5 GHz and handles control/data plane and application-aware content processing, deep packet inspection, pattern matching, network admission control and encryption acceleration. The first implementation of this advanced processor architecture is the MPC8572 PowerQUICC™ III processor family, built on Power Architecture™ technology. Freescale's MPC8572 processor platform provides an integrated solution designed to take on today and tomorrow’s network information processing challenges.

Freescale's newest PowerQUICC III platform builds on Freescale's state-of-the-art embedded core performance, with advanced features for traffic management and application acceleration. The platform unifies the architecture to take on the challenges of traffic management that relies on application-layer or service-layer awareness to either protect a network by isolating a suspect flow, or to increase responsiveness by giving a requisite priority to that flow. In essence, it provides the best of both worlds—speed and enhanced security features.

Target applications for Freescale's MPC8572 include multi-service routing and switching, Firewall/VPN, Unified Threat Management and Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems, Anti-virus, Load balancing, Content switching, and Application-aware networking equipment. This next-generation architecture also addresses the computationally demanding processing requirements of wireless infrastructure equipment, such as radio node controllers (RNCs) and WiMAX basestations.

Freescale's new PowerQUICC III processor platform is positioned to enable new services, new levels of protection and new levels of performance for a broad suite of communications elements. Its scalability and flexibility allow optimal design creativity for a broad range of applications, such as access gateways and multiplexors, residential gateways and multifunction service gateways, as well as a variety of other bandwidth-intensive applications that require an economical form factor.
