IEEE® 1588 Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems or Precision Time Protocol (PTP) was developed to quickly synchronize networked clocks with differing precision, resolution and stability to better than a microsecond-level accuracy. IEEE 1588 protocol was designed for low-cost implementation, simple installation and maintenance in Ethernet networks. As an early adopter of the IEEE 1588 protocol, Freescale began shipping processors with hardware timestamp capabilities in 2007.
