Freescale Semiconductor

Ireland

Welcome to Freescale Semiconductor Ireland.

Freescale's Design Centre in Cork, Ireland was established in 1998. An integral part of Freescale's WMSG (Wireless and Mobile Systems Group), the Cork team develops products for portable wireless applications. This includes all radio (RF) and mixed-signal transceiver integrated circuit functions between the air-interface antenna and the main digital signal processor. Many of the products designed in Cork can be found in high volume Motorola cell phones.

The team of 45 skilled engineering staff are involved in system engineering, product architecture creation, precision analogue, RF and digital IC design, advanced CAD methodologies, physical design of ICs, modules and evaluation boards, IC and system verification, validation and application support.

Brief history of the Cork site

  • 1998 First two employees start work at the Freescale Ireland Design Centre.
  • 1999 In May completed the design of the 1st GPRS capable transceiver using 0.5um BiCmos technology. Later that year re-located to new facilities in the Airport business park.
  • 2000 Continued to develop advanced cellular radio transceivers while our social activities included a sponsorship of the "Dawn till Dusk" 1 day 300km charity cycle, raising $7.6k for charity.
  • 2001 40th employee joins the design group, design team participates in a global effort that shipped a baseband processor with the highest level of integration in the industry using 0.13um CMOS technology.
  • 2003 The University College Cork design team won the 2003 "Wireless and Beyond Design Exposition" Global Design Competition.
  • 2004 Participated in the designed of the 1st DVB-H receiver and in the same year successfully designed 1st Enhanced GPRS transceivers. This was the year also that Freescale Semiconductor was launched by Motorola.

We continue to develop new products for the wireless market using latest technologies and addressing market requirements for 2 and 3G cellular networks. We foster a close relationship with local universities through postgraduate sponsorship and undergraduate summer placement programs. In addition, the site is proud of its strong community identity and has sponsored the "Tour de Munster" charity cycle for the past four years, helping raise significant funds for charity as a result.
