MC9S08QG: High Integration—Low Price

There is no other 99-cent* 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) on the market today that can offer you the same level of integration as Freescale’s MC9S08QG. High feature integration on a single chip means you continue to save even after the purchase because you won’t need as many external system components, reducing design time and lessening the probability of overall board quality issues.

Combining the advantages of the HC908Q with the outstanding low-power capabilities of the HCS08 core, the MC9S08QG is redefining the low-end 8-bit MCU, answering the market demand for more tightly integrated, lower power and lower cost devices. Suitable for such applications as handheld devices, home appliances, security and alarm systems, toys, lighting control and industrial control, it greatly enhances the Freescale 8-bit portfolio that also provides high resolution analog, multiple communications options and motion control-ready devices.

MC9S08QG Features

  • Up to 10 MHz (bus frequency) HCS08 central processor unit (CPU) at >2.1 volt operation for 100 ns minimum instruction time and 8 MHz bus frequency at <2.1 volt operation
  • Flexible programmable 16-bit timer/pulse width modulation (PWM) module (TPM) that is one of the most flexible timer modules for the money; each channel can be independently programmed for input capture, output compare or buffered edge-aligned or center-aligned PWM
  • HC08 instruction set with added background (BGND) instruction, which means it’s an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use architecture that is backward compatible with 68HC08 and 68HC05 devices; BGND lets you enter background debug mode
  • Support for up to 32 interrupt/reset sources that allow greater software flexibility and optimization for real-time applications
  • Flash read/program/erase over full operating voltages with up to 100,000 write/erase (W/E) cycles, which allows for electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) emulation, helping to reduce system costs and board real estate
  • Internal clock source (ICS), which can eliminate the cost of external clock components
  • 8-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for simple interface to analog inputs, such as sensors
  • Background debugging system and on-chip in-circuit emulation (ICE) with real-time bus capture provides single wire debugging and emulation interface, eliminating the need for expensive emulation tools
  • A variety of packaging options, from 16-pin plastic dual in-line (PDIP) for the lowest cost manufacturing processing to the ultra-small 8-pin dual flat no lead (DFN) for applications with very small real-estate requirements

Starting up your MC9S08QG product development is simple and inexpensive when you use a cost-effective demo board and CodeWarrior™ Special Edition software. The DEMO9S08QG8 demo board’s integrated Background Debug Mode (BDM) Multilink allows real-time, in-circuit Flash programming and debugging and provides access to the HCS08 on-chip ICE. You can also program and debug code using CodeWarrior Development Studio for HC(S)08, Special Edition, through a DB9 serial port and included RS-232 serial cable or USB. This CodeWarrior Special Edition integrated development environment (IDE) with Processor Expert™ technology, which can be downloaded from our Web site at no additional cost**, has been specifically tuned for HC(S)08 applications with tightly integrated tools and a user-friendly graphical interface that take the “chore” out of product software development. Skip the drudgery of endless debug cycles at the end of your project. Just define the functionality you need, and Processor Expert technology generates tested, optimized C-code tuned for your application and the particular HC(S)08 derivative you have chosen.

The CodeWarrior ANSI C/C++ and compact 16 KB C++ compilers take full advantage of the HC(S)08 architecture, with more than 60 advanced optimization strategies specifically designed to boost performance and reduce code size. The CodeWarrior tool suite has the essential additional tools you need, but you can also "plug-in" your favorite third-party editors, compilers and debuggers if you prefer.

Small + general-purpose + low-power + feature-rich = MC9S08QG. It’s so highly integrated, it’s a shame to call it a low-end MCU—even if it looks like one and is priced like one.
