Freescale's MPC8349E Delivers USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Capabilities

Freescale's MPC8349E PowerQUICC™ II Pro, introduced to bring flexibility and integrated security benefits to a wide range of application designs, is now certified by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) as meeting the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed industry standard.

"This processor was designed with the benefits that USB 2.0 Hi-Speed compatibility brings to our customers, and certification by USB-IF means that we've met those design expectations," said Mike Shoemake, business manager for the Digital Systems Division at Freescale's Networking & Computing Systems Group. "Designers can be assured the MPC8349E helps them to incorporate an industry-standard interface into their designs. And, the end customers who buy our customers' products are also assured of true USB 2.0 Hi-Speed compliance."

Freescale chose SMSC, a leading supplier of USB 2.0 PHY (physical layer) solutions. For Universal Transceiver Macrocell Interface (UTMI), SMSC's proprietary GT3200 technology allows high-speed peripherals to operate from available power by way of the USB cable. The USB3300 solution for the UTMI + Low-Pin Interface (ULPI) is a stand-alone, Hi-Speed USB PHY Transceiver, using a low pin count to connect to a ULPI-compliant link layer.

"We've seen significant customer interest in Freescale's MPC8349E," said Steve Nelson, vice president of marketing for SMSC's Connectivity Solutions. "By combining our two leading-edge technologies, customers can rest assured that Freescale and SMSC are providing an optimal, certified solution for USB 2.0."

Both UTMI and ULPI were compliance-tested and passed, signifying that designers can benefit from risk-free development, fast time to market and flawless interoperability between embedded USB core logic and USB Hi-Speed transceivers. Testing was done under the direction of the USB-IF Inc., a non-profit corporation founded by the group of companies that developed the USB specification.
